STEP 3:

The Pencil

I didn't used to pencil characters in before drawing them. In fact, most of the comics I drew before Summer 2006 were done straight in pen, except when there were complicated poses.

However, now I find it easier (and faster) to draw in pencil first. I make less mistakes, and all the character's expressions come out with the right amount of spontaneity and looser lines.

As you can see, when I pencil characters in, I often forget things like tongues, eyebrows, and the like. I add that all in later in pen.

I use a regular HB pencil for penciling.

I use a regular piece of 8 1/2 x 11 printer paper to draw the comic on. I usually fill the whole paper. Hence the name of the comic, and all!
